Fitz Hugh Lane House Design & Reuse Feasibility Study
Gloucester, Massachusetts

Thomas Mayo Associates / Architects & Urban Designers, in association with Moriece & Gary, Landscape Architects, prepared a Design and Reuse Feasibility Study for the historically significant Fitz Hugh Lane House, originally the home of the world renowned marine painter Fitz Hugh Lane until his death in 1865. The project was sponsored by the City of Gloucester, Massachusetts.

Constructed of local Cape Ann granite stone, the house sits on a high point commanding a panoramic view of Gloucester Harbor. Situated on top of the otherwise stark hill, it presents both a dramatic and forbidding appearance. Over the years, it has had many uses, including a temporary town jail. The Fitz Hugh Lane House is a significant Gloucester landmark and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

TMA surveyed the existing conditions, measured and prepared base drawings for the building. Based on several conceptual reuse scenarios developed with the City, TMA prepared design drawings and projected cost estimates for two selected reuse programs. One scheme utilized the first and second floors as Mini-Exhibit Spaces for public exhibits on Fitz Hugh Lane, the fishing industry and the sea; the top floor was to used as an Artists' Studio available to local artists on a rotating basis. The second scheme proposed the use of the ground floor as a Visitor's Center, with Town Offices and a Meeting Room on the second and third floors; each scheme also included public restrooms facilities
